Course Outline: Computer Network Technician

This two year program is designed to instruct students on all aspects of computers: from repair of a stand alone PC to administering and managing a complete network. Upon completion of year one, students will know how to repair and upgrade all aspects of PC systems. Students will learn how to install and configure software especially operating systems like DOS and WIndows. Finally, students will learn the basics of networking computer systems. Students will be able to write CNA and A+ certification exams at the end of year one. All students must take part in summer workshops or job training before entering year two.

FUN1811 - (120 hours) Introduction to Computer Fundamentals

This course is a combination of courses, which will give the student a sound understanding of the working of a personal computer and its functionality. Topics will include Microsoft Office Suite of Products, Microsoft DOS and Windows, mathematics for the IT Industry, Project Management Fundamentals and the hardware construction of a PC.

ITC1811 - (120 hours) Information Technology Concepts I - Programming and Database Administration

This combination of courses will give the student the tools to problem solve using techniques used in the programming field. Visual Basic will be used as the program to convey these principles. This program is meant as an introduction to programming. In addition the student will learn the principles of database design and construction using Microsoft Access.

ITC1821 - (120 hours) Information Technology Concepts II - Networking and Web Design

The first part of this course is to teach the student fundamentals of graphic design with an emphasis on color management. The student learns image manipulation, and the importing and exporting of an image. In this portion of the course will include the design of a web enough to design their won web site. The second half of this course will introduce the student to computer networking using Novell's NDS 4.11 architecture. This portion is part of the instructional material for the CAN program.

NET1811 - (120 hours) Microcomputer Repair I

This course serves as an introduction to the OS portion of the A+ certification process. Topics included in this course are: functions, structures, operations and file management of the DOS operating system, and Win 3.x, and Win 95/98 user interfaces. Memory management and types of memory of the three OS systems.

NET1821 - (120 hours) Microcomputer Repair II

This course will include the second part of the PS portion of the A+ certification process. Topics included in this section are: installation, configuration, and upgrades to the DOS OS and Windows GUIs, diagnosing and troubleshooting DOS and Windows systems, and dealing with networks as to DOS and Windows. Upon completion of this course students will be ready to write the A+ software (DOS/WIN) exam.

NET1831 - (120 hours) Microcomputer Repair III

This course is the introduction to the core exam of the A+ certification process. Topics included in this section are installation, configuration and upgrading of hardware components; diagnosing and troubleshooting of hardware; and safety and preventative maintenance of PCs.

NET1841 - (120 hours) Microcomputer Repair IV

This continuation of NET1831 will teach the following topics to the student: motherboards, processors, memory and printers.

NET1851 - (120 hours) Microcomputer Repair V

This last component of the A+ certification exam included the following subject material: portable systems, basic networking, and customer satisfaction. Upon completion of this course students will be prepared to write the second part of the A+ certification, the A+ Core exam.

NET1861 - (120 hours) Microcomputer Repair VI

This course will teach students the final components of Computer Networking using Novell NetWare. This is a continuation of NET1811 and NET1821. This course includes the following topics; security, general principles, accounts and properties, creating accounts with NWADMIN and UIMPORT file system security, and NDS security; the NW console: about the console navigation and RCONSOLE; Misc.: Client 32, login scripts, NAL, backup and installation. After completion of this course students will be prepared for their CAN certification exam.

PRM1811 - (120 hours) Project Management

This course is designed to introduce students to group projects. Over this four-week period, the student will be assigned several projects related to their field of study. They will be responsible for electing team leaders, completing projects on time, and making reports and presentation on the work they performed. Students will be required to interact with many of their classmates in many different roles.

OJT2600 - (240 hours) CCNT Work Practicum

To be eligible for a two-month practicum, students must pass all course subjects with 60% and successfully complete their project management.
