Course Outline: Database Administrator

This two year program is designed to instruct students on all aspects of computer programming. Upon completion of year one, students will know how to create business applications for PCs using different programming languages. Students will also learn how to create database applications and the theory to implement these databases. At the end of the first year, all students must take part in summer workshops or job training.

FUN1811 - (120 hours) Introduction to Computer Fundamentals

This course is a combination of courses, which will give the student a sound understanding of the working of a personal computer and its functionality. Topics will include Microsoft Office Suite of Products, Microsoft DOS and Windows, mathematics for the IT Industry, Project Management Fundamentals and the hardware construction of a PC.

TC1811 - (120 hours) Information Technology Concepts I - Programming and Database Administration

This combination of courses will give the student the tools to problem solve using techniques used in the programming field. Visual Basic will be used as the program to convey these principles. This program is meant as an introduction to programming. In addition the student will learn the principles of database design and construction using Microsoft Access.

ITC1821 - (120 hours) Information Technology Concepts II - Networking and Web Design

The first part of this course is to teach the student fundamentals of graphic design with an emphasis on color management. The student learns image manipulation, and the importing and exporting of an image. In this portion of the course will include the design of a web enough to design their own web site. The second half of this course will introduce the student to computer networking using Novell's NDS 4.11 architecture. This portion is part of the instructional material for the CAN program.

PRO1811 Theory of Programming

This course will introduce the students to programming theory. The objective of this course is for the student to learn problem-solving skills using thinking and logic. Students will analyze various business problems and decide what would be the best approach for solving the problem. Topics include flowcharts, structure, documentation practices, control structures, object-oriented programming theory, and GUI programming.

PRO1821 Business Application Development

Using Visual Basic 6 students will learn to program business applications. Topics will include the following: MDI forms, Forms as Objects, Tree View and List View Controls, Building Classes and Collections, Data Tools, Migration to Active Data Objects, Building Interfaces from the Database, encapsulating Database Functionality, Planning Applications, Internet Integration, Creating IIS Applications, and Active X Technology.

PRO1831 Database Theory

This course will include elements and principles that are common to database management systems (DBMS). Emphasis will be on the logical thinking required to design complex databases. SQL (Structured Query Language) will also play a significant role in this course. SQL is a database language used to obtain information from many types of database software.

PRO1841 Client/Server Application Development

Using PowerBuilder students will learn how to create applications using a Client/Server environment. PowerBuilder allows the user to create applications that work directly with server DBMSs. Topics included in this course are: database structures and management, direct data manipulation, extended data attributes, building windows as applications, data windows and queries, control break reports, inheritance, enabling data modification capabilities, connecting data windows, dynamic data windows, creating menus and building executables.

PRO1851 Database Design

Using Access students will learn how to create databases. Topics included in this course are: creating and managing date, creating forms, creating reports, modifying database structure, creating multiple table queries, developing forms with sub forms, complex reports, sharing with other office programs, advanced queries, complex objects, database objects, macros, modules and database maintenance.

PRO1861 Object-Oriented Programming

This course will introduce students to OOP (Object Oriented Programming) using C++. Students will be provided with a solid understanding of the OOP environment. The emphasis will be placed on object classes and using object-oriented techniques to build applications.

PRM1811 - (120 hours) Project Management

This course is designed to introduce students to group projects. Over this four-week period, the student will be assigned several projects related to their field of study. They will be responsible for electing team leaders, completing projects on time, and making reports and presentation on the work they performed. Students will be required to interact with many of their classmates in many different roles.
